The traditional Greek religion was pagan polytheism, meaning that it included many gods and other supernatural beings. Many of the ideas about the gods were inherited from the Middle East. At that time, the people had to honor the gods to thank them for blessings received and to receive blessings in return.

The people pleased the gods by sacrificing animals and other kinds of food, or decorating there statues and temples with art, offering prayers, holding festivals, and so on. The gods became angry when the people preformed sacrifices improperly, violated the sanctity of a temple, or broke there sworn word. The Greeks believed that the angry gods inflicted punishments such as famine, earthquakes, epidemics or defeat in war.
